Natural Remedy: cough syrup

Unfortunately, our little guy came down with a bit of a cough and cold this week. It is one of those things you just need to ride out. I never like the term 'ride it out' as it means I am raccoon eyes, sleep deprived for the next couple of days. I started up the humidifier and saline drops but Anders was still waking himself up all night with a pretty aggressive cough. I am no fan of medicines unless in dire situations so I scoured the internet for home remedies. I ended up creating my own natural cough syrup blending all my favorites: onion, ginger, lemon, apple cider vinegar, and dark honey (for kids over 1 year of age). I can't say for sure if it was my miracle blend that helped Anders sleep better last night but I think it definitely gave a kick start to feeling better.

Natural Remedy: Cough Syrup

2 Tbsp raw dark honey
1 tsp apple cider vinegar
½ small onion
½ lemon (slices)
1 tsp of fresh shaved ginger
½ cup water

In a small pot, combine water, ginger, sliced lemon including peel and sliced onion. Bring to a boil then simmer for 10 minutes. Careful not to let all the water evaporate...we need about 2 Tbsp of the broth. After 10 min, take 2 Tbsp of liquid from the pot and place into a bowl then add honey and apple cider vinegar. Stir with a fork.

For kids under 2, I would suggest starting with ½ a tsp every 4-6 hours or as you feel is needed. This should help soothe the throat and provide some extra antioxidant support and natural uper healing powers that will hopefully get you or your kids feeling like new.
